Is the pit of despair the only option?
Everyone feels low at some point or another however, depression can take you into the pit of despair where often you cannot see a way out of a situation. Depression can affect relationships, prevent a person from functioning in a healthy way or disrupt eating and sleeping patterns.
Depression can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, race or class. In the UK alone 12% of men and 25% of women suffer from depression. Symptoms can last weeks, months or even years with devastating effects to the sufferers and those who care about them.

Self Harm Self harm is often a way of expressing deep emotions, in particular anger and a belief of not being good enough. It is most common in girls of 12-19 and in men of 19-24. The most common type of self harming is cutting wrists, arms and legs and less common the abdomen, genitals, breasts and face.
Self harm usually hides deeper underlying issues that would need therapeutic intervention in order to help identify the root causes and move on to a more self content life.

Suicide The most extreme act of despair and hoplessness is to take your own life. Often the person considering suicide believes that those left behind are better off without them or it's the only solution to relieving the pain and grief they are feeling.
Carla Alves da Silva has worked with many of those 'left behind' - the sons, daughters and families of those who felt that suicide was their only option. No matter how old your parents, children or family are, a person who takes their own life leaves behind deep psychological wounds that are very difficult to heal.
If you are contemplating taking your life, please stop for a moment and consider the following - if you were on a train journey and the train entered a tunnel would you throw your ticket away and jump off? Or would you stay on to the end of your journey?
There are many ways of working through how you may be feeling, therapy opens up your options.
